Retired from the Circuit Bench in 2013 after nineteen years, three of which were spent as Director of the Judicial Studies Board (after three years part-time Course Director for Family Courses) and three as Secretary General of the European Judicial Training Network. Prior thereto twenty three years at the Bar with an extensive Family Law practice, especially ancillary relief, involving cases at all levels of assets and income.
On the Bench I was one of seven Midland Circuit Judges able to undertake Ancillary Relief appeals and more latterly one of four in the Midlands authorised for first instance Financial Relief work as well as having the appellate jurisdiction. The delays and inconsistency of tribunal endemic in the Court system lead me long ago to the conclusion that there had to be a better way of conducting this important work. Arbitration provides that vehicle and maintains the blend of consistency of tribunal with expertise while retaining all the advantages that continuing lawyer representation can bring if that is the wish of the parties.
