After a career as a Civil and Family Finance barrister of over 40 years Derek now works exclusively as an IFLA Arbitrator, Civil Dispute Mediator, Legally Qualified Chair of Police Misconduct Panels and Independent Legally Qualified Advisor to Police Misconduct Panels.  His practice as a family finance barrister focussed on cases involving companies, partnerships and businesses and there was a significant overlap with his civil practice in these areas, as well as insolvency, property law,  TLATA and Inheritance Act claims.  The majority of IFLA cases that come his way involve business or land dispute issues.

Derek is a very experienced Civil Dispute Mediator. He has acted as a Mediator in over 100 cases both in this jurisdiction and abroad, and by private appointment and Court nomination. He is registered with the CMC and a longstanding  members of the Standing Council of Mediation Advocates, with whom he holds an Advanced Certificate.  He has a particular knowledge of and interest in TLATA and Inheritance Act claims and these form the majority of the cases he mediates on.

He is the non-executive Chair of the YOU Trust, a major regional charity involved in social care.
