I am a partner at national law firm Mills & Reeve LLP, and since 2008 have headed the Manchester family and children team and our national non-court dispute resolution practice. I qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and have specialised in family work since then. I act for clients across England and Wales and overseas, in and outside court.
As well as being a qualified children and financial arbitrator, I am an accredited family and civil/commercial mediator, and qualified to supervise other mediators, and to meet with children. I am a non-practising counsellor.

I am passionate about assisting families to resolve their disputes without court proceedings, in mediation where possible, and in arbitration if they are unable to reach an agreement and need me to make important decisions for them.

Whilst being recognised in the independent legal directories as a leading individual and for legal expertise in complex cases, my approach is a very human one, with a focus on minimising the impact of disputes on all of the family. Family issues often cause a huge amount of stress and/or emotional distress, and arbitration conducted decisively and with empathy can be brilliantly effective at achieving a swift and cost-effective resolution, whilst also enabling those involved to have their say.

“Alison Bull is singled out as being ‘just superb at diffusing conflicts; she is astute and technically brilliant and is a top-drawer family lawyer and mediator with an excellent manner with clients’ and ‘very sympathetic but gets to the point’”(Legal 500)

Chambers of David Josse QC 5 St. Andrew’s Hill,

Maria practices exclusively in family law with a specialism in financial remedy applications and children money work.

Maria is well known at the Bar and has won an award for her work from the Bar Council. She is extremely warm and engaging with clients and opponents. As someone who is divorced and a single mother to two young daughters she understands all too well the emotional as well as financial impact family breakdown and court proceedings has upon clients, their children and family. However her warm approach with clients belies a tenacious and dogged approach with the other side and in court. She is trusted by several loyal instructing solicitors and members of the judiciary.

Her money/ financial practice concerns cases where the parties’ wealth is substantial or else the issues complex. She is regularly involved in cases where the asset wealth is several million, involving issues of serious non-disclosure, assets outside of the jurisdiction, international issues and family Trusts. Maria’s money work includes acting for the husband/ boyfriend, wife/ girlfriend or else third party intervener including on behalf of the Crown (in asset recovery cases). Maria also undertakes Trusts of Land Act 1996 (TOLATA) matters, concerning parties who were never married.

Maria is also a strong advocate in private children law disputes including financial claims on behalf of a child under Schedule 1. She is professional but empathetic, bringing to court proceedings the “human touch”.

I deal exclusively with financial remedies work, specialising in complex cases, especially those involving marital agreements, trusts and corporate structures, cases involving non-disclosure and Schedule 1 Children Act claims.

I was a former solicitor and busy family barrister at the coal face of family courts of all levels across the country for 25 years before taking silk in 2020. I have been involved in a number of high-profile cases in England and the Isle of Man: from those involving assets in their millions to much more modest cases, taking in the whole range of financial remedies issues. I have a very broad and deep understanding of financial remedies work and take a genuine interest in the development of this area of law, especially how to resolve disputes in ways which reduce unnecessary costs and stress.

I speak regularly at seminars, conferences and other national family law events which, along with contributing to the monthly e-letter produced by the Judicial College, keeps me up to date with financial remedies law and practice.

I undertake private FDRs (out of court neutral evaluations) and, outside of family law, I sit as a judicial officer in rugby union cases, chairing panels for the RFU, European and World Rugby for disciplinary matters, competition appeals and safeguarding issues.

I am recommended as a Tier 1 advocate in the various legal directories (which are included on my chambers’ profile – please see link below) and am known for being friendly, approachable, and very down to earth.
